Kale Nyabo is the First International Start-Up That Won the Danish National Championship
A few months back Kale Nyabo won the Danish National Championship in Entrepreneurship and the VISA Everywhere Award for Digital Commerce in the European championship. Did we expect this? Definitely not!

Our crafters are Ugandan single mothers with an entrepreneurial drive, struggling to provide for their families. We sell their products online through Kale Nyabo so we can secure them with a steady income and access to the online global market. Aside from that, we donate up to 50% of our profit to underprivileged children in Uganda for school fees and/or medical treatments.
The RM in Entrepreneurship in Randers
While the Kale Nyabo team was on a business trip in Uganda the deadline to apply for the Regional Championship of Entrepreneurship came closer. For almost a month we were very busy working with our designers, visiting the children we support and documenting everything. We were a bit insecure about writing our business plan, we needed to prioritize and a push of someone who believed in us. Gitte Buje from the Erhvervsakademi Aarhus – who was an incredible support and believer -, gave us that push to write our business plan and to apply. Else, we might have never had such a great chance and what a shame that would have been.
At the end of April 2018, Kale Nyabo did not win any of the prizes in the RM, but we did get a wild card to the DM in Entrepreneurship. After the RM we definitely got some good feedback and the whole team went all in. We made long days and nights practicing our pitch into perfection. Our teachers would visit us regularly listening to our pitching and giving us valuable feedback. Until this day we can still dream the exact pitch. However, it was all worth it and real teamwork has gotten us so far.
50.000DKK and a handshake from H.K.H Crown Prince
For the first time in history, an international start-up has won the Danish National Championship in Entrepreneurship. At the end of May 2018, we were the first team to go on stage to pitch and we thought that being the first would be a disadvantage for us. We were well prepared, but still nervous. Beforehand we decided as a team that already being able to participate and to network was a great win for us, so anything else would be a great extra.
Our pitch was rock solid, but other ideas were also great and innovative too. The hours seemed so long, but when we heard our name as the winners of ‘’Kategorivinder Social Entrepreneurship’’ we were overwhelmed with emotions and so proud. H.K.H Crown Prince joined the event for the awards and would personally hand out the main prize to the team that would be the Danish National Champions. The Crown Prince started talking about the team that was going to win that title and the main prize and it sounded a lot like it could be us, but we just came down from the stage with 25.000DKK and thought it couldn’t be true. ‘’And the winner is: KALE NYABO’’, everyone started clapping, we started hugging and became all emotional. Did we just become the Danish national champions of entrepreneurship 2018?! That evening we went home with 50.000DKK for Kale Nyabo, an amazing experience, lots of new connections and had the chance to have a talk with H.K.H Crown Prince. However, things weren’t over yet…
Kale Nyabo Goes to Latvia to Represent Denmark and Meets 15 Teams From All Over Europe
It was June 2018 and while we were running Kale Nyabo, going to school, preparing for exams and working at our part-time jobs we now also had to prepare for the European Championship in Riga, Latvia.
There were many prizes to be won and a lot of new connections to be made. This event lasted for 2 days and after the pitching session, the interview with the main jury and the stand exhibition interviews we could only cross our fingers and hope for the best.
While waiting impatiently for the award ceremony – which was really well organized by JA Latvia – we were of course extremely nervous and had high hopes. So when Anthony Craufurd from VISA got on the stage to reveal the winners of the VISA – Everywhere Award for Digital Commerce and said the two words we wanted to hear so badly after: ‘and the winner is..’: KALE NYABO, we were overjoyed. We had won 1000 Euros and a trip to London to visit VISA’ s headquarters and meet with some of their experts to help us with our business. However, Kale Nyabo being rewarded by VISA was already a huge pat on the back for us.
Dream Big and Go All In
Friday the 7th of December had finally come and we were well prepared to go and visit VISA in London. We first had a tour through VISA’s Innovation Center where we were able to see and use some of the gadgets they have been working on together with some of their partners and how they can simplify online payments in our daily lives.
Afterwards, it was time to meet professionals from different fields. We met with the founder of From Babies with Love, who shared her experiences within social entrepreneurship. Since it was VISA that we were visiting we also had a chance to talk to two experts about online payments systems, how to optimize the user’s experience and how to promote a social enterprise. After the lunch break, we met with two experts in marketing and we talked about social media, google ads, and different channels and ways of promoting our social enterprise.
We gained so much new knowledge and came back with lots of notes and good ideas. Now we are preparing to start putting them into practice and focusing on taking Kale Nyabo to the next level.
